As Bob Knight finished his years coaching for the Army basketball team at West Point, he moved on to become the head coach at Indiana University.  Not too long after becoming the head coach there he began to build up national attention for building winning teams.  In his first four seasons in Bloomington, Indiana University won the Big Ten championship three times back to back and they were national champions in 1976.

Along with building up national attention for building winning teams, Knight also built up notoriety for the way he coached and the way he acted towards fellow coaches, his players, and the media.  In 1976, as the U.S. team coach he was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer during a dispute of the use of a practice gym, in Puerto Rico during the Pan American Games.  But, maybe the most notable incident of temperament that has been recorded of coach Bob Knight would have to be the “chair throwing” incident that occurred during a February 23, 1985 game against Purdue.  IU was losing and Knight received a technical foul for protesting on official’s call.  He reacted by picking up a chair from the IU bench and tossing it on to the playing floor.  He received a second technical for that move, and when he continued to protest he was ejected from the game.

Throughout his years as the Indiana head basketball coach he was criticized for many things that he did.  And during the 2000-01 season Knight was told to apologize for the things that he had been doing and the board at Indiana University issued a “zero tolerance” policy, under which any new incident of inappropriate behavior would result in immediate termination.  On September 8, 2000, that policy was put to the test.  Knight got in trouble for putting his hand on one of his players outside of the basketball court.  After that incident he was fired from the Indiana University.

Then on March 23, 2001, Knight signed a five-year deal worth 1.25 million to become the head coach at Texas Tech where he remained until February 4th, 2008 Knight abruptly resigned as coach at Texas Tech.  At Texas Tech coach Bob Knight won 138 games altogether.
